Catching Hope

I am sitting at my desk in my home office with tears streaming down my face. They are tears of joy and this strange feeling of hope. I am watching the Harris/Walz rally in Philadelphia and seeing hope on display. Walz just said, " Thank you for bringing back the joy". And it is so true.

I have the unique privilege of knowing Tim Walz as neighbor and friend. We lived across the street and down a couple of houses from each other in the Norman Rockwell-esq neighborhood of West Mankato. We raised kids together, my husband taught with him at West High School, we campaigned hard for his first congressional run, his campaigns for Governor, and celebrated each election. He is a man who is decent to his core.

When COVID hit, I was running the shelter. It was such a scary time. While many didn't agree with the choices Walz made, he and his team created a foundation and strategy for those of us on the front lines to find the support, the guidance, and the encouragement we needed. We made it through the whole entire first year of the pandemic without a case of covid in our shelter. I credit the resources and the guidance we got from the governors team.

As we continued to grow the shelter and learn of the ever growing needs of those experiencing homelessness in our community, Walz was working for affordable housing and money for shelters. In true Tim fashion, he saw me at a football game and said- "Hey, I'm working on a plan to get shelters money. I won't forget." And he saw it through.

I think some of my tears fall for my daughter and my tiny new grandaughter. To think that we could have our first female black president, a genuine good guy as the vp and a campaign platform that promises women the right to make their own choices for their bodies gives me hope for THEIR futures.

The Sassy Pastor isn't going to become a political blog. But on this day- I am so so filled with hope and can attest to the true integrity, authenticity, and passion of Tim Walz. In a world where division, hate, lies, and ugliness have festered- this truly feels like a breath of fresh air. And I for one am breathing DEEPLY of hope.
